Stanley H. Murdock, 88, passed away on Sunday (Jan. 15, 2012) at Wellsville Manor Care Center after a long illness.
Mr. Murdock was born on Jan. 3, 1924, in Troupsburg and was the adopted son of the late W. Reid and Anna (Scott) Murdock. He was a 1941 graduate of Knoxville Central School and a 1947 graduate of Eckels College of Mortuary Science in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He proudly served in the United States Army Air Corps from Feb., 1943, until April, 1953. During World War II, he flew 35 first class bombing missions as a flight engineer/upper gunner aboard a B-17 in the Mediterranean Theatre of Operations.
On June 4, 1950, in Austinburg, Pa., Stanley married Faith Bolton, who predeceased him after nearly sixty years of marriage on March 21, 2010. Together, Stanley and Faith cherished their time spent with their family.
Mr. Murdock was a long time insurance agent with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company retiring in 1979 after 23 years of service. After his retirement from Metropolitan, he dedicated himself to community service until he became disabled due to Alzheimer’s disease. Upon moving to Hornell in 1984, he was an active member of the Park United Methodist Church. After relocating to Scio in 1994, he served through his membership in the Scio United Methodist Church, Scio Lions Club and Scio Sunshine Club. He also delivered Meals on Wheels and provided transportation for the Office for the Aging where he was honored as Volunteer of the Year in May of 1996.
Stanley is survived by a daughter, Wendy (Daniel) Fleming of Scio; five grandchildren, Dr. Matthew Fleming of New Haven, Ct., Melody (Jason) Gildner of Wellsville, Army Specialist Brent Fleming, currently stationed at Ft. Lee, Va., Teresa Panasosky of Palm Coast, Fla., and Laura (William) Moffitt of Sykesville, Md.. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren, Halle, Ethan, and Benjamin Gildner, Nita (Matthew) Eldred, and Lucy Moffitt.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his biological parents, Archie and Ella Hurlburt, seven biological brothers and sisters, and a grandson, Samuel Fleming.
Friends may call on Saturday from 1-3:30 p.m. at Baker-Swan Funeral Home, 3256 Riverside Drive, Wellsville. The funeral service will be held on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at the funeral home immediately following the visitation with Rev. Vickie Hedlund of the Allentown United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery in Austinburg, Pa. at the convenience of the family. Online condolences may be offered at www.baker-swan.com.
