Arthur R. Nelson

December 24, 1952 - August 21, 2025

EAST AURORA – Arthur R. Nelson, 72, passed away on Thursday (August 21, 2025) at Mercy Hospital in Buffalo following a medical emergency.

Mr. Nelson was born on December 24, 1952 in Norwich to George E. and Gertrude (DeKay) Nelson. He served in the United States Navy from 1970 – 1972 and spent much of his time aboard the USS America (CVA-66).

Arthur worked in railroad construction for Conrail in Olean for much of his career. He later became a machine operator for a factory in N.C.

Art is survived by seven children, Archie Nelson, Arthur Nelson, Jr., Gerald Nelson, Jamie (Justin Button) Nelson of Bolivar, Aaron (Ashley) Nelson and Heather (Lawrence “Buck”) Neri, both of East Aurora and Colbie Pierson of N.C.; seven siblings, Wanda Lafferty, Tamella Milliken, Patricia Ullman, Robert Vaughn, Jeff Vaughn, Tim Vaughn and Catherine Nelson; the mother of three of his children, Tracy Hoy of Wellsville; nine grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his father, George E. Nelson; his mother, Gertrude Vaughn; and nine siblings.

Art was all about ancestry and enjoyed unraveling genealogy puzzles. He also became a collector of Indian memorabilia and artifacts. A favorite pastime for Art was strumming songs on his guitar.

Art was always available and helpful though he had a hard time asking help for himself. Some might call him stubborn but others would say he was proud. And yes, he was a proud American who loved his flag and the eagle that represented his country. He was also proud of his grandchildren and loved them with all his heart.

There will be no prior visitation. A graveside memorial service with full military honors will be held at Bath National Cemetery on Tuesday (September 2) at 1:00.

Arrangements are under the direction of Baker-Swan Funeral Home in Wellsville/Scio. Online condolences may be offered at www.baker-swan.com. © 2025 Baker-Swan Funeral Home.
