Robert J. “Bob” Emery

June 3, 1948 - June 7, 2022

ANDOVER – Robert J. “Bob” Emery, 74, passed away at home on Tuesday (June 7, 2022) surrounded by his family.

Mr. Emery was born in North Hornell on June 3, 1948 to Donald J. and Carolyn (Smith) Emery. He was a 1968 graduate of Andover Central School. On June 30, 1973 he married Susan I. Manroe who survives.

Bob was employed by Dresser-Rand in Wellsville directly out of high school. He remained there for 28 years, retiring in 1996.

Along with his loving wife of 48 years, Bob is survived by two children, Joseph P. Emery and Jennifer (Scott) Updyke of Andover; two sisters, Susan (Steve) Roeske of Kodiak, Ten., and Mary (David) Nevol of Andover; a brother-in-law, Charles (Koneta) Manroe of Canisteo, and two sisters-in-law, Bonnie Emery of Andover, and Nancy Osgood of Arcadia, Fla.; six grandchildren, Alex Emery, Ion Emery, Owen Emery, Preston Updyke, Colton Updyke, and Tyton Updyke; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a brother, William Emery.

Bob was a dedicated outdoorsman who took great pleasure in hunting, fishing and trapping. He particularly enjoyed fishing with his wife and trap shooting. A favorite pass time for him was taking rides through the countryside sightseeing, as well as spying out deer.

He was a good father and was supportive of their events. Throughout school he attended their games with his wife. His grandchildren were his delight and he was very patient with them.

At work, Bob was affectionately known as “Bear.” His wife clarifies that as a “gentle teddy bear.”

Known as a homebody, he was happy to tinker in his garage where he meticulously kept everything in its place. On many moderate nights, Bob was content to stoke up a good campfire in the back yard and just soak it in. Being outdoorsy, he was always ready to join in a picnic, especially the Memorial Day picnic. He enjoyed all of these activities best when they included family. An evening sitting on the porch, scoping out the neighborhood, and hugging his wife was a very satisfying way for Bob to end his day.

Visitation will be held on Saturday (June 25, 2022) from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Andover. The memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. at the church immediately following the visitation with Rev. Calvin Densmore officiating. Online condolences may be offered at www.baker-swan.com.
