Sandra J. Shawl

April 10, 1943 - March 13, 2025

ANDOVER – Sandra J. Shawl, 81, passed away on Thursday (March 13, 2025) at Jones Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.

Mrs. Shawl was born in Wellsville on April 10, 1943 to Carl J. and Vera Mary (Harris) Burch. She was a 1962 graduate of Andover Central School. On July 10, 1962 Sandra married William R. Shawl, who preceded her in death on August 10, 2003.

Along with nurturing her family, Sandra worked as a senior clerk at Acme Electric Corp in Cuba for 33 years from where she retired in December, 2001.

Sandra is survived by two children, Melody (Jay) Harms of Sherman and Raymond (Breni Crosby) Shawl of Dunnellon, Fla.; two siblings, Connie Washburn of Wellsville and June Freeman of Andover; four grandchildren, Melinda (Cole) Garifi of Jamestown, Kristal (Travis) Scadden of Sherman, Mark (Jessica) Shawl and Kelly Brady, both of Cuba; eight great grandchildren, Owen Scadden, Emmett Scadden, Aiden Scadden, Olivia Shawl, Makayla Shawl, Troy Shawl, Emily Brady and Patrick Brady; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Alice and Harry Hurd of Cuba; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Along with her husband of 41 years, Sandra was preceded in death by a brother, Victor (Lucille) Burch, and two brothers-in-law, Jim Washburn and Ronald Freeman.

Sandra learned to embrace the outdoors, even in the winter. She delighted in camping in Elm Valley at the old homestead, affectionately named “The Grove” nearly every weekend with the Washburns. In winter she was an avid snowmobiler. She enjoyed traveling to Florida, Virginia and North Carolina and in later years she became a Florida snowbird.

Indoor activities included crocheting items such as blankets and dishtowels which she frequently gave as gifts for family and baby showers. She was a voracious reader and enjoyed various types of literature. She was a controlled collector of rooster and chicken themed items, such as placemats, towels and figurines.

Sandra was a studious and organized person though her children smiled at her careful saving of every receipt, bank statements and tax returns covering decades. She was also a member of the senior citizen’s group in Cuba.

Visitation will be held on Thursday (March 20) from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Baker-Swan Funeral Home in Andover. The funeral service will be held on Friday (March 21) at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Bruce Wehner officiating. Burial will take place at Valley Brook Cemetery in Andover.
