WELLSVILLE – Darlene Ann Brown, 78, passed away on Wednesday (August 28, 2024) at Jones Memorial Hospital following a lengthy battle with cancer.
Ms. Brown was born on October 7, 1945 to Kenneth Gordon and Miriam Leona (Hoxter) Bowles. She was the stepdaughter of Leslie Stocking, who, along with her mother, raised and nurtured her from the time she was in grade school. After graduating from Hornell High School in 1963, Darlene studied cosmetology at Pauldine’s Beauty School in Elmira.
Darlene owned and operated her own business, Darlene’s Beauty Shop for several years. She worked at Accord Corporation for more than 30 years, retiring in 2015 as the Housing Manager. She later returned to the workforce part time at the Cattaraugus Development Corporation for 6 years.
Darlene is survived by four children, Timothy (Michele) Brown, II, and Eric (Krisinda) Brown, both of Andover, and Heather (Rick) Wonderling and Aaron (Amanda) Brown both of Wellsville; the father of her children, Timothy Brown of Andover; nine grandchildren, Brandon (Jessica) Brown, Kristen Brown, Zachary Brown, Kayden Wonderling, McKenna Wonderling, Connor Brown, Kaleb (Kate) Nolan, Mackenzie Nolan, and Mason Russo; one great grandson, Liam Brown; two dear sisters-in-law, Donna Brown and Sue Brown; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Along with her parents and stepfather, Darlene was preceded in death by four sisters, Genevieve Feenaughty, Elena Cole, Caroline Bond, and Marjorie Wehner.
Darlene took great pleasure in reading. Other leisure activities included watching television. Her movies were Hallmark and westerns, and her favorite sport was golf. She also surfed Facebook frequently to keep up and catch up with friends and family.
Holidays were a major highlight for Darlene as she was privileged to host the family get togethers. She loved baking and cooking so these parties were a golden opportunity to shower her family with her talents.
The joy of her life was time that she spent with people, especially her family—right down to the youngest great grandchild. She enjoyed many great times and adventures with her sisters-in-law, Donna and Sue. The family get togethers were held at her house and often included her famous spaghetti dinners. Laughter was a large part of her personality and she found many ways to share fun times with family and friends.
Her children have many great memories of their mom: her help with raising grandchildren was invaluable, a special vacation to Gettysburg; and memorable birthdays. Darlene provided a welcoming and inviting haven for her children who were finding their way. She modeled for them a selfless and forgiving life.
There will be a time of visitation at Baker-Swan Funeral Home in Wellsville/Scio on Wednesday (September 4) from 5-7 p.m., followed by Darlene’s memorial service at 7:00 p.m. with Rev. Marc Chamberlain of Genesis Bible Church officiating. Online condolences maybe offered at www.baker-swan.com.

So sad to hear of Darlene’s passing. I worked with her when she headed up Allegany County Section 8 Housing and then again when she worked part-time with Rosanne and myself. She was a valiant fighter& will be sorely missed. message
