ANDOVER – David N. Herr, 94, passed away peacefully on Friday (January 17, 2025) at Wellsville Manor Care Center.

Mr. Herr was born on September 14, 1930 in Providence Township, Pa. to Frank H. and Ella S. (Neff) Herr. He was proud of the fact that at 55 years old, he earned his GED. On December 13, 1950, at the Kauffman’s Mennonite Church in Manheim Township, Pa. he married Orpha M. Bauman, who survives.

David worked the Herr Dairy farm with his dad in Lancaster County, Pa. until 1958 when he moved to Andover where he and his wife owned and operated the Herr Family Dairy Farm before retiring from farming in 1980. He worked for Central Tractor in Wellsville for 8 years and Central Tractor in Hornell for 9 years, retiring in 1997.

In addition to his wife of 74 years, David is survived by six children, Dennis (Kimberly) Herr of Wellsville, Sue (Scott) Conklin of Campbell, Nelson (Debra) Herr of Mountain Top, Pa., Dan (Melinda) Herr of Brownstown, Pa., Lori (Daniel) Henderson of Batavia and Keith (Susan) Herr of Valrico, Fla.; an exchange student who was loved as a son, Wilson (Christiana) Borguetti: two sisters, Alice Shenk and Helen Shenk; one sister-in-law, Charlotte Bauman; 19 grandchildren, Jeremy (Amanda) Newcomer, Kristine (Josh) Herr, Brandon Herr, Dennis (Shay) Barnhart, Brittney Confer, Brandon Conklin, Zachary (Emily) Herr, Joshua (Brittany) Herr, Justin (Courtney) Herr, Stephanie (Brad) Herr, Lindsey (Jordan) McMullen, Danielle (Travis) Groff, Amy Herr, Emily Herr, Trey Henderson, Lexi Henderson, Matthew Herr, Kendall Herr and Jake Herr; 19 great grandchildren; two special friends who were like family, Lonnie and Marilyn Trego of Newmanstown, Pa.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one daughter, Grace Marie Newcomer, his father and mother-in-law, Ernest and Grace Bauman; six brothers-in-law, Luke Bauman, Mark Bauman, Elwood (Arlene) Bauman, Elvin (Miriam) Bauman, Glenn Shenk and Samuel (Rachel) Risser.

Other than his Bible, Dave enjoyed reading western novels and autobiographies. He also enjoyed gardening, both vegetables and flowers and his yard was a visual delight to passers-by all summer long. During his retirement years, David expressed his creativity through woodworking, including items such as wooden trucks and magazine racks. His children and friends were the happy recipients of these labors of love, as well as various benefit auctions.

Also, during his retirement years, Dave volunteered for Mennonite Disaster Committee helping to rebuild after floods and fires in several southern states.

Dave was a member of Hallsport Christian Church for many years, where he enjoyed a caring church family. After Dave was unable to drive, these friends still included him in their Bible Studies, holding them at Manor Hills Assisted Living Facility so that he could continue to participate.

The Herr Family wishes to thank the wonderful and caring staff at both Manor Hills Assisted Living Facility and Wellsville Manor Care Center. They were all so kind to our Dad, despite the challenges of dementia. We are also grateful for the many friends who were so helpful in keeping Dad (and Mom) in their own home until well into their 90’s, with special thanks to Ann and Bob Sherwood, Steve and Liz Lewis, and Dave and Kelly Koch, as well as the Hess family and so many others too numerous to mention. You all have our heartfelt gratitude.
