CHEEKTOWAGA – James Vernon Morton, 86, passed away on January 9, 2025 at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital in Buffalo following a lengthy illness.

Mr. Morton was born in Avoca, Pa., on January 28, 1938 to Harry and Gladys (Waltz) Morton. He was a 1954 graduate of Hornell High School. Following high school, he attended Alfred University, graduating in 1956 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Accounting. On June 13, 1964 in Hornell, Jim married the love of his life, Mary L. Brown, who survives.

Jim primarily worked as a credit manager at Hart Schaffner Marx in Buffalo, from where he retired in 2001. Earlier he worked at Sherwin Williams Paints also as a credit manager.

Along with his wife of more than 60 years, Jim is survived by his daughter, Pam (Bob) Cregg of Clarence; his son, Bobby Morton of Cheektowaga; four grandchildren, Brandon Cregg, Kelly Cregg, James Morton, and Jesse Morton; two great grandsons, Daniel Morton and Caiden Morton; and close friends, Mike and Donna Berg.

Jim enjoyed playing basketball, softball, and playing tennis with his good friend Len Mendy. In high school, he once scored 100 points in one basketball game, holding the Hornell High School record. Jim’s teams were the Buffalo Bills and the Yankees; he thoroughly enjoyed keeping track of both teams although they frustrated him. A favorite activity was his outings to the area casinos.

Along with his children and grandchildren, Jim took great pleasure in his Golden Retriever fur babies, Barney and Bailey.
