She enjoyed watching birds in her back yard…
ALFRED STATION – Leona M. Grace, 67, passed away on Monday (February 21, 2022) at Strong Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.
Leona was born on April 29, 1954 in Lima to Charles and Lucille A. (Scott) Grundman. As a young child, she was raised by her mother and step-father, Edwin Dechau. She was a 1972 graduate of Honeoye Falls-Lima Central School.
Leona worked as a clerk in retail sales for most of her career. Most recently she worked for Dollar General in Alfred Station. Previously, she was a longtime employee for Market Basket in Andover, as well as Alfred Unimart and Short’s Self Service in Alfred Station.
Leona is survived by her daughter, Donna Cornell of Alfred Station; five siblings, Sharon (John) Neenan, Laurie (Ed) Wolf, Terry (Nancy) Dechau and Lenny (Karen) Dechau, all of Lima and Rick (Judy) Dechau of Florida; three grandchildren, Adreanna Buchholz, Brylee Buchholz and Elyzah Buchholz, all of Alfred Station; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents and step-father, she was predeceased by her life partner, Robert Cornell.
Some of Leona’s favorite pastimes were cheering on her granddaughters at their soccer games and crocheting. She enjoyed watching birds in her back yard and checking on her neighbors across the road. Some of her daughter’s favorite memories were the frequent trips with her mom to grammy’s house in Lima and the undirected road trips for ice cream and shopping. They never knew where they would end up.
Per her wishes, there will be no prior visitation. A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held at a time to be determined. Arrangements are under the direction of Baker-Swan Funeral Home in Andover. Online condolences may be offered at www.baker-swan.com. © 2022 Baker-Swan Funeral Home.
