Valerie Dawn Heckman

February 26, 1955 - March 15, 2024

REXVILLE – Valerie Dawn Heckman, 69, passed away on Friday (March 15, 2024).

Valerie was born in Wellsville on February 26, 1955, the daughter of the late Donald J. and Irene B. (Haxton) Edwards. She was a 1973 graduate of Greenwood Central School.

Valerie was United States Postal Service mail carrier serving the Central New York Region for many years before retiring.

Valerie is survived by her three sons, David (Judi) Heckman, Craig Heckman and Kristopher Heckman; her siblings, Susan Stevens, Starlith (Alex) Farrell, Theresa Burdick, Brian (Janet) Edwards and Thalia (Sam) Finegold; her partner, Gary Tremaine; and her house cat, Abby.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Dale Edwards and two brothers-in-law, Greg Stevens and Greg Burdick.

Valerie was an avid runner who enjoyed fitness and often took laps around Oneida Lake. She loved decorating for the holiday seasons. Her elaborate holiday decorations were breath taking. Christmas was her favorite holiday to decorate and celebrate, a passion inherited from her mother. Valerie had an extensive antique egg beater collection. During the sunny days she spent most of her time outside in her garden, working in the yard or helping on the family farm. She also enjoyed cruising the St. Lawrence River. She was very artistic and was able to further pursue her passions after retiring.

Throughout her life she was first and foremost a dedicated mother. She supported all of her sons’ pursuits ranging from education, sports and music. She attended many out of state lacrosse games and attended a variety of their concerts. She was unfailingly supportive and will be greatly missed.

Per her request, there will be no services. A Celebration of Life is being planned for this summer. Arrangements are under the direction of Baker-Swan Funeral Home in Andover. Online condolences may be offered at www.baker-swan.com.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Valerie’s name may be made to American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6707, Hagerstown, MD 21741. © 2024 Baker-Swan Funeral Home.

  2. Val was 1 year ahead of me in school. We often sat next to each other on the school bus ride home. We were also in several extracurricular activities together like cheerleading. Val was our cheerleading captain if I remember correctly. 50 years ago seems like yesterday, but I remember Val for her beautiful blue eyes, her kindness to everyone, and how smart and artistic she was. Val also had a great sense of personal integrity.

My thoughts are with Susan, Brian, Star and the rest of her family.
