George Frederick Hakes

January 18, 1959 - July 8, 2021

SURRY, VA. – Mr. George Frederick Hakes passed unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, July 8, 2021.

He was born in Corning on January 18, 1959 and grew up in Belmont. He graduated from Breeden School of Welding in Genesee Pa.  Later, he moved to Surry, Va. where he worked as an iron worker and explored other trades as well.  George loved to fish and hunt. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially from the seat of his motorcycle.

He was predeceased by his mother Lois B. Williams Hakes of Elmira; his father, Leon Edwin Hakes Sr. and his sister, Irene Hakes.

George leaves to cherish his loving memories, four daughters Tina Howard of Springville, Desiree Hakes of Wellsville, Heidi Hakes and Abigail Hakes of Surry, Va.; three brothers and four sisters, Rev. Gary Hakes of Dundee, Karl Hakes of Bath, Leon Hakes of Surry, Va.; his sisters, Marlene Overstrom of Painted Post, Sandra Bushong of MO., Linda Jackson of Surry, Va. and Robin Hakes of Clyde.  Several grandchildren, an unborn grandchild, and several aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews.

There will be a Celebration of Life for George on Saturday (September 11, 2021) at 11:00 a.m. at the Scio Fire Hall. Local arrangements are under the direction of Baker-Swan Funeral Home in Wellsville/Scio.
