WELLSVILLE – Stephen A. Congelli, 72, passed away on Saturday (February 4, 2023) at Bath VA Medical Center following a brief illness.

Mr. Congelli was born on July 15, 1950 in Wellsville to Felix R. and Lasca O. (Baker) Congelli. He was a 1968 graduate of Andover Central School. He served in the United States Army from 1973 to 1976 and again from 1978 to 1980.

Stephen was a machine operator for many years at Gunlocke in Wayland where he retired in 2010.

Steve is survived by three sisters, Sharon Congelli of Rochester, Candace “Candy” Congelli of Rock Hill, S.C. and Julienne “Julie” Roach of Asheville, N.C.; one brother, Robert Congelli of Wellsville; a dear friend Reba Davis of Andover; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Steve was an avid New York Yankees and Buffalo Bills fan. He loved to fish, especially with his friends Al and Bryan. Steve enjoyed watching the old westerns on TV.

Steve loved his family, especially his nieces and nephews. He was kind and caring with a great smile and a wonderful sense of humor. His nephew recalls the time he was playing basketball with Uncle Steve in the driveway and later had a conversation about his struggles with loneliness and finding his place in the world. Uncle Steve took the time to talk, crack a few jokes and in his way reminded his nephew of the important things in life; like family. Family was important to Steve and you knew he always had your back.

Per Steve’s wishes, there will be no prior visitation. There will be a graveside service on Friday (February 10) at 1:00 p.m. at Hillside Cemetery in Andover with Rev. Christian Mattison of Andover Presbyterian Church officiating. Full military honors will be rendered by the combined Andover and Wellsville American Legion and the United States Army.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Steve’s name may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675 or to Allegany County Cancer Services, 100 South Highland Avenue, Wellsville, NY 14895. © 2023 Baker-Swan Funeral Home.
