He had a generous spirit and opened his heart to all.
WELLSVILLE – Edward N. Black, 60, passed away on Monday (October 25, 2021) in Marietta Memorial Hospital, Ohio following a valiant fight with Covid-19.
Mr. Black was born in Wellsville on September 7, 1961 to King S., III and Patricia (Fisher) Black. Ed was a 1980 graduate of Wellsville Central School. He enlisted in the United States Army and served from 1981-1985. While he was home on a two week leave, on August 29, 1981 at Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville, he married his high school sweetheart, Angela Cavagna, who survives.
Edward was currently working as a NACE II Coating Inspector for Conley Energy Solutions for the past several years. He was a proud member of the Laborers Local 621 in Olean since September 26, 1988; 33 years of continuous service. Previously, he worked for other companies during his career, including Baker’s of Jericho Hill in Alfred and L.C. Whitford in Wellsville.
Along with his wife of 40 years, Ed is survived by his mother, Patricia Black of Wellsville; his sons, Edward (Shawna Cwiklinski) Black, Jr. of Wellsville, Steven (Jillian Geffers) Black of Alma, Dakota (Carellynn Harrison) Black of Wellsville; his daughters, Chelsae (Brady) Miles of Irvine, Calif., Krista (Keegan Harrington) Black of Belfast; his brothers Bradley (Margie) Jadwin of Wellsville, Richard (Cindy) Jadwin of Wellsville, King (Tammy) Black, IV of Scio and Jeff (Jeannie) Black of Wellsville; his mother-in-law, Ada Cavagna of Shongo; brothers-in-law, Tony (Sharon Corderman) Cavagna of Genesee, Pa., David Cavagna of Shongo, Steve (Colleen) Cavagna of Andover and Andy (Rhonda) Cavagna of Shongo; sisters-in-law, Theresa (Doug) Carl of Wellsville, Martha Cavagna of Wellsville and Carrie (John) Billings of Marion; his grandchildren, Braiden Black, Noah Black, Audra Black, Gabriel Black, Jaxson Black, Elijah Black, King Black, V, Brady Miles and Keano Miles; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews as well as many dear friends; too many to name. They know who they are.
Ed was preceded in death by his father, King Black, III; his father-in-law, Albert Cavagna, and his niece, Logan Black Culver.
In high school, Ed enjoyed spending time roller skating with his friends every Friday night. He had a great appreciation of music, especially older country and rock and expressed it by playing his guitar. One of his favorite pass times was to play pranks with his brothers. Ed had a great sense of humor that he shared freely with others. He loved “performing” the Chicken Dance, Cha Cha Slide and the Cupid Shuffle at weddings with all the young girls. He felt like quite the stylish guy in his favorite denim jacket.
Ed loved working on cars, but not on Chevy’s. He was very proud of his 1969 orange Firebird and 2001 yellow Mustang. Traveling was in his blood. He, along with Angie riding shotgun, made many cross-country outings to California, Florida, Myrtle Beach, the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, and his all-time favorite locations, Savanah, Ga., and Tybee Island.
Ed’s family was extremely important to him. It was his special job to make pancakes for his grandchildren. He was a hard worker and used his skills to work on his house. He was passionate about doing a job well and worked to pass that pride along to his grandchildren; taking great delight in being their teacher about so many of life’s big and little things. Not only did he attend his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events; he also coached softball, baseball and assisted with wrestling. He was his daughter’s biggest fan for their cheerleading and gymnastics events.
Ed had a radiant smile and he delighted in making others laugh. Even his children’s friends counted him as a special person in their lives as he was always willing to take them in or help them in any way he could. He had a generous spirit and opened his heart to all.
Friends are invited to call on Friday (October 29) from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Baker-Swan Funeral Home in Wellsville/Scio. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville, with Rev. Robert Agbo, officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Online condolences may be offered at www.baker-swan.com.
