Howard Dale Green

ANDOVER – Howard Dale Green, 91, passed away peacefully on Monday (September 18, 2023) at his home.

Mr. Green was born on the family farm in East Valley on January 7, 1932 in Andover to Howard William and Nellie Bernice (Atwell) Green. He graduated from Andover Central School in 1952. On September 26, 1953 he married Mary Lou Clark, who predeceased him on April 20, 1979. On January 19, 1980 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Wellsville, he married Mary-Jane Fosdick, who survives.

Dale worked for AGWAY, spreading lime on fields from 1957 to 1966 and later worked at Air Preheater from 1966 to 1968. In 1968 he became the head of the audio/visual department at Agricultural Technical College in Alfred where he worked for the next 26 years, retiring in 1994. In his retirement years he was a trucker for Don Siegrist at Spruce Glen Equipment in Jasper.

In addition to his wife of 43 years, Dale is survived by six children, Alan (Sharon) Green of Andover, Jim (Debra) Green of Spencerport, Lynn Jordan Ninos of Decorah, Iowa, Victoria Jordan (Sebastian) Dunne of Wellsville, Todd Aaron Jordan of New Hampshire, and Robert Emory (Sandra) Jordan of Texas; a daughter-in-law, Jane Green of Arkansas; a sister-in-law Bernadine Green of Andover; and a special “adopted” daughter, Elisa (David) Almodovar and family.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Lou Green; a son, John Green; a brother Gerald Green; a grandson, Gregory Nicholas Dunne; and a great grandson Wyatt Everett Snyder.

Dale was a farmer and lover of all animal husbandry, especially horses and dogs. He was an accomplished cattleman in both the beef and dairy spaces. Some of his fondest memories were preparing and taking part on the Andover 4th of July Parade with his team of Quarter Horses and sometimes his pony team. Dale was a photography and film enthusiast with his dark room in the cellar. For years he used his talents to capture weddings and other events.

Dale was the epitome of a father figure not only to his own children but to any person who needed guidance. Known for doing good deeds quietly, he was always there for a friend in need. His jokes would liven up any activity be it hay rides for family or church, would bees for a neighbor or enjoying youth group at the family camp.

Dale was a member of the Andover Lions Club for 19 years where he served a term as president and was Lion of the Year. Dale also served as sexton for Valley Brook Cemetery in Andover from 1970 until about 2010.

In his early days, he was a member of the Future Farmers of America. Dale loved the Lord and spent many years as a member of the Chenunda Creek Fellowship Church in Independence where he served in many capacities.

Visitation will be held on Saturday (September 23) from 11 a.m. – noon at the Chenunda Creek Fellowship Church in Independence. The memorial service will take place at the church immediately following the visitation with Pastor Stephen Richard officiating. Burial will follow in Valley Brook Cemetery in Andover.
