Joyce Ann Farnum

KNOXVILLE, TENN. – Joyce Ann Farnum, 76, formerly of Andover, passed away on Friday (February 10, 2023) at Ben Atchley Tennessee State Veterans Home.

Joyce was born on February 9, 1947 in North Hornell to Leighton and Lucille Austin. She was a 1965 graduate of Alfred Almond Central School and retired in 2002 from Alfred University College of Ceramics after a 35-year career. On April 8, 1967 she married Duane L. Farnum who predeceased her on December 26, 2001.

Joyce is survived by a daughter, Doreen (Ron) Schommer of Knoxville, Tenn.; two granddaughters Abby Schommer of Knoxville, Tenn. and Raylyn (Daniel Lindenmuth) Schommer of Red Creek, N.Y.; one grandson Ryin Schommer of Ontario, N.Y.; a brother, Rod (Melanie) Austin; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son Matthew Farnum in March of 2022.

Joyce loved her grandchildren and was anticipating the arrival of a great-grandson due in June. She was an avid Buffalo Bills fan, a devotion that was passed down from her father who shared his love of football with her.

Joyce loved flower gardens, crafts and watching her birds. She had many fond memories of attending craft shows with her best friend Mary. Joyce spent years camping at Lake Lodge in Alfred with seasonal sites side by side with her parents. She enjoyed attending NASCAR races at Watkins Glen and local short track Woodhull Raceway with family and friends.

The family will hold a celebration of life this summer at a date to be determined followed by a private burial in the Maplewood Cemetery in Alfred Station. Arrangements are under direction of Baker-Swan Funeral Home in Andover. Online condolences may be offered at www.baker-swan.com.

  1. Loved your Mom honey. I really missed her when she moved away. We used to have some good times. I am so sorry. Thought about your Mom often but never found out how to reach her.
