OLEAN – The children of Margaret Ann (Peggy) Karst celebrate the long and loving life of their beloved mother.

Peggy passed on September 26, 2022 at the age of 90 after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. She and her husband, Walter Edward Karst, who preceded her death in June 1987, raised five children at their home in the Town of Olean.

Peggy was born in Olean, the daughter of Helen (Fulkrod) Reynolds and Guy Reynolds, with siblings Richard Reynolds (deceased), Wilford Reynolds of Brea, Calif. and Audrey Banfield of Decatur, Ga.

Peggy was a graduate of Olean High School, class of 1950. In 1951 she and Walter were married at the St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church where she was a lifetime member.

Peggy is survived by four children, Barbara Kay (Robert) Hayden of Olean/Ft. Meyers, Fla., Deborah Karst of Dublin, Calif., Brenda (John) Mitchell of Encinitas, Calif., and Kelly (Mary) Karst of Olean. She lost a daughter, Linda Karst, in 1966. Peggy is also survived by eight grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

Peggy was a very loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She had many interests throughout her long lifetime. Her talents were endless. She was a wonderful cook, talented seamstress and loved knitting. Peggy volunteered at the Olean General Hospital, sewing, and knitting afghans for the nursery. She delivered for the Meals on Wheels program for many years. She supported her community as an election poll worker for the Town of Olean, registering voters for many years. She was a stylish member of the Red Hat Society with her many lady friends.

Arrangements are under the direction of Baker-Swan Funeral Home in Wellsville/Scio.

A celebration of life will be held at a date to be determined. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Hinsdale Fire Department, 3832 Main Street, Hinsdale NY 14743. © 2022 Baker-Swan Funeral Home.
