Philip L. Clarke

March 20, 1944 - July 19, 2024

ANDOVER – Philip L. Clarke, 80, passed away on Friday (July 19, 2024) at Wellsville Manor Care Center following a brief illness.

Mr. Clarke was born on March 20, 1944 in Wellsville to Lawrence P. and Charlotte M. (Alvord) Clarke.

Philip worked as a laborer for Allegany County ARC for many years. Additionally, he worked as a custodian for Andover Library and Alfred State College.

Philip is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins including his care givers, Kevin and Annette Perry.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by six sisters, Charlotte Lynch, Irene Tiffany, Ida Bongiva, Edna Fanton, Elizabeth Berry and Mida Claire; and three brothers, Lou Claire, Ernest Claire and Clinton Claire.

If you had the pleasure of meeting Philip, he instantly became your friend. He was an open book and his transparency couldn’t help but to make you smile. He was well known around town for his blue, three wheeled tricycle with the shopping basket attached. He loved to share his stories and the latest news about the village. Philip never failed to mention his Mom somewhere in the conversation and how much he missed her. She passed in 1987.

Philip’s favorite pastimes were oil paint by number, feeding the deer in the park, enjoying his beloved cockatiels, Winkie and Gracie, and watching reruns of the old Western movies. He possessed a large collection of Elvis records. For his date night out, he loved going to dances and bowling.

There will be no prior visitation. The memorial service will be held on Wednesday (July 24) at 11:00 a.m. at the Baker-Swan Funeral Home in Andover with Pastor Daryl Ordiway of Andover First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery. Online condolences may be offered at www.baker-swan.com.
