ANDOVER – Gloria Jean Manion, 77, passed away on Tuesday (August 16, 2022) at Jones Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.
Mrs. Manion was born on October 13, 1944 in Princeton, Ind. to Harold and Blanche (Reeves) LaMare. She was a 1962 graduate of Weston High School in Weston, W.V. On May 11, 1963 she married Richard Joseph Manion, who predeceased her on August 8, 2012.
Jean devoted her life to the raising of her five children. Once they were all well established in school, she began her pursuit of a nursing career. Jean earned her Associate’s in Nursing from Alfred State College and later her Bachelor’s of Science from SUNY at Brockport.
Jean began her nursing career in 1980 at Jones Memorial Hospital. Upon moving to Florida in 1988, she worked at the Malcom Randall Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Gainesville, Fla. In 1990, she transferred to the Bath VA Medical Center as the District Director of Nursing, retiring in 2002.
Jean is survived by two sons, Robert “Bobby” (Leila) Manion of Panama City, Fla. and James (Jami Sherwood) Manion of Andover; one daughter, Laura Manion Bolter of Cape Coral, Fla.; a brother, Thomas LeMare; two sisters, Susan Jester and Gwen Worthington; three grandchildren, Jessica Wesche, Melissa Campbell and Riley Bolter; six great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and her beloved dog, Jack.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Carol Ann Manion and a son, Richard Eric “Dicky” Manion.
Jean was an avid reader with a broad interest in books. She enjoyed romance novels, murder mysteries and history of all types. Her love of history drew her to be a member of the Andover Historical Society. She also found time to do needle point and cross stitching. Many of her projects were framed and given as gifts.
Jean loved her family. She attended all of her children’s sporting events and greatly enjoyed the many sleepovers of her grandchildren.
A favorite pastime of Jean’s was sitting on the front porch, exchanging visiting with the many neighbors that passed by.
Per her wishes, there will be no prior visitation. There will be a Celebration of Life service at a time and date to be determined. Arrangements are under the direction of Baker-Swan Funeral Home in Andover. Online condolences may be offered at www.baker-swan.com.
