William G. Nolan

August 7, 1935 - September 8, 2024

WELLSVILLE – William G. “Bill” Nolan, 89, passed away on Sunday (September 8, 2024) at Elderwood at Hornell in North Hornell following a lengthy illness.

Bill was born on August 7, 1935 in Millport, Pa., to Guy and Lillian (Peterson) Nolan. Bill enlisted in United States Navy in 1952 where he served for four years. He then served in the United States Air Force until his discharge in 1960. On March 11, 1963 Bill married Eloise V. Houghtling, who predeceased him on December 18, 2020.

Bill worked as a welder for Alstom Air Preheater in Wellsville from 1963 until he retired in 1988.

Bill is survived by two sons, Andrew (Lisa) Nolan and William G. (Jennifer) Nolan II both of Wellsville; five grandchildren, Cody (Rachael) Nolan, Casey Humphries, Jade Nolan, Sierra (Eli) McCaig and Josie Nolan; and six great grandchildren, Garrett Humphries, Wyatt Humphries, McCoy McCaig, Devon Taylor, Remington McCaig and Isla McCaig.

Along with his wife of 57 years, Bill was predeceased by his siblings, Amelia Johnson, Luella Kemp, Howard Nolan, Peg Summerfield, Virginia Hamilton and Jen Gleason.

One of the greatest delights of Bill’s life was traveling with Eloise. Together they visited exotic destinations such as Istanbul and Morocco as well as European locations including Barcelona, Rome, and Venice. He was proud to revisit Alaska, where he had served during his military years. Bill’s travels included many Caribbean ports of call, as well, from their many cruise vacations. Bill loved to meet people and see the sights.

Early in life, Bill was active at rodeos showcasing his bull riding skills. He continued to enjoy rodeos even when he was no longer a participant. For many years, he took great pleasure in horse riding. Bill was a member of Crystal Valley Saddle Club in Corning. He was an avid hunter.

Bill was a grand character who loved talking with people, sharing his stories, and creating a laugh or two.

There will be a time of visitation on Wednesday (September 11) from 6-8 p.m. at Baker-Swan Funeral Home in Wellsville/Scio. The funeral service will be held on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Diane Cox officiating. Burial at Stannards Cemetery with full military honors will follw the service where he will be laid to rest beside his wife. On line condolences may be offered at www.baker-swan.com.

  1. I enjoyed my Central Tractor days visiting with Will and wife. He was a character with a big heart. After I left CT I would see out and about at local stores always had time to visit. He was so proud of his family.
